Alyssa Sutherland

Communications & Editorial Specialist

Alyssa is a activist, public health researcher, and community engagement practitioner. Originally from St. Louis, MO, she is an MPH candidate at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in the Department of Population and Family Health, concentrating on sexual and reproductive health, gender, communications, and human rights. She earned her B.S. in Public Health and Women’s and Gender Studies from Syracuse University, where she was named a CDC John R. Lewis Scholar. As a Lerner Center Fellow for Digital Storytelling, she sits on the board of the NYC Voices Film Festival; she also serves as the communications and editorial specialist for the University of Chicago’s GenForward survey project and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Columbia. Her work spans mixed-methods research on gendered contraceptive decision-making, STI-prevention program design, adolescent sexual health, and feminist thesis fieldwork in India on the entanglements of disability, gender, and intimacy. With a particular interest in reproductive justice and participatory storytelling as advocacy, Alyssa aims to work at the intersections of feminist public health, community health, and structural approaches to sexual and reproductive health to fight for health equity and gender justice.
